Prabowo says he would fly to Pyongyang, if anyone invited him

President Prabowo Subianto told a Chamber of Commerce meeting that he is willing to go to North Korea if South Korea wants him to. The idea came from South Korean President Lee Jae Myung at their meeting in Seoul in April, where Lee asked whether Prabowo could press Pyongyang "to open some kind of a dialogue." Prabowo's answer: "I told him, with all due respect and willingness, if you asked me to, I would go."

The pitch rests on Indonesia's oldest foreign-policy habit. Prabowo said Indonesia "is seen as having no interest in meddling in other countries' domestic affairs. We hold firm to that." In practice that means keeping normal relations with almost everyone and refusing to pick a camp, which is why Jakarta can talk to both Koreas when Seoul cannot get a reply from the North. Lee's office backed the idea in a statement, saying countries with friendly ties to both sides could help the two Koreas live together peacefully. Nobody is talking about a peace deal here. A mediator in this situation mainly carries messages and gets a conversation started.

There is a plain hole in the plan, as the South China Morning Post points out. North Korea has not invited him, and has turned down Seoul's approaches since it declared the South a "hostile nation" in 2024. At home, meanwhile, Prabowo's long list of foreign trips has become a sore point, in a month when polling showed his approval falling over prices and jobs.

Why it matters

Prabowo offered to mediate between Iran and the United States back in March, so it is fair to ask what Indonesia gets back from playing peacemaker in other people's fights. Real mediation would raise Indonesia's standing and give it something to trade on with both Washington and Beijing, but an unanswered offer costs the president political credit he is short of. Watch for an actual invitation from Pyongyang before treating any of this as more than a statement.
